Azerbaijani President Pulls Out of Election Race
Ilham Aliyev could soon be leading one of Asia's oil rich giants, Azerbaijan. The 41-year-old is in the frame for the job after his father, the current president, pulled out of this month's election race on the grounds of failing health. Heydar Aliev had steered his son into the post of prime minister and groomed him for power. He even changed the constitution to make Ilham his direct successor to rule Azerbaijan, a key energy exporter. But the KGB and Communist Party veteran who has held control for 14 years has overlooked at least one crucial point, according to analysts. They say Ilham is a political lightweight and not up to the job. And, with around a dozen candidates expected to stand on October 15th, the vote could spawn infighting and fragmentation - fuelling the kind of instability Heydar Aliev has spent his career trying to control. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Azerbaijani President Heyder Aliev, left, poses with his son, Ilham in Azerbaijan in this 2002 handout photo.
