Some Israeli tanks early Tuesday morning moved into Gaza City from the south, witnesses said, hours before Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was to meet with the political-security cabinet to discuss responses to the Ashdod Port bombing two days earlier, in which 10 Israelis were killed. According to press reports, soldiers surrounded an abandoned building, apparently planning to blow it up, and ordered families from nearby houses to evacuate the area. Two Palestinian policemen were wounded by Israeli gunfire. Israel's Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, who returned Monday from a visit to the United States, ordered security chiefs to "step up the offensive against Hamas," Haaretz reported The sources said that assassination attacks against Hamas leaders will be increased. According to the newspaper, Israeli officials also decided to step up ground attacks in the Gaza Strip and Israeli forces will reportedly be deepening their raids. Elsewhere, earlier Tuesday morning, in the West Bank town of Qabatia, located south of Jenin City, at least one Palestinian civilian was reportedly arrested by Israeli troops, after a contingent broke into his house.
