Israel Kills 6 Palestinians in Gaza Missile Strikes
Israel killed four Palestinians in two missile strikes into a Gaza refugee camp Wednesday, pursuing what it called a relentless offensive against Palestinians after two bombers struck a strategic Ashdod port. Israeli military action against Palestinians unfolded Tuesday when three helicopter missiles hit the house of an Islamic Jihad commander in Gaza City killing at least two Palestinians. Fighting flared in the Rafah refugee camp after the air strikes as troops backed by tanks and bulldozers demolished at least 16 houses. The raids followed an Israeli Cabinet decision on sustained military action after Palestinian bombers killed 10 people at the port of Ashdod Sunday. The bombing unnerved Israelis because Palestinian attackers slipped out of Gaza for the first time in nearly three and a half years of conflict. In Rafah, on the border, an Israeli helicopter fired two missiles overnight into a group of Palestinians, killing two. Another Israeli missile launched into Rafah at midmorning killed a 15-year-old youth and critically wounded a boy of 14 who died later, medics said. More rallied in northern Gaza's Jabalya refugee camp to condemn the army raids and shout support for the two Palestinian bombers who carried out the Ashdod attack, both locals. Meanwhile, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat accused Israel of trying to destroy Gaza before vacating it. "Nobody can push the Palestinian people to their knees," he said at his West Bank headquarters where he is confined by Israeli forces. **PHOTO CAPTION*** A Jewish soldier prays next to a tank holding position near kibbutz Be'eri in southern Israel, near the border with the northern Gaza Strip, Wednesday, March. 17, 2004.
