Gunmen opened fire on a car carrying Iraqi women working with British forces in southern Iraq on Monday, killing two women and injuring two others, police said. Lt. Col. Ali Kadhem, of Basra police, said attackers drove alongside the women's car as they were driving to work at Basra airport at about 8 a.m. local time and sprayed gun fire at them, The AP reported. Kadhem added one woman was seriously injured. All four worked as cleaners at the airport, which is used as a base by British forces. Meanwhile, unidentified person activated a car loaded with explosives, mortars and rockets Monday near the gates of a U.S. base in the northern city of Mosul, killing an Iraqi guard, a woman and a child, the US Army said. Three US troops were wounded by the attack. Also Monday, attackers shot and killed a senior Interior Ministry official and two of his bodyguards in a drive-by shooting at the official's Baghdad home, according to the Interior Ministry. Col. Musab al-Awadi, the ministry's deputy chief of tribal affairs, and his guards had just left the house in al-Baya neighborhood when the gunmen drove up and shot them, according to Sabah Kadhim, an Interior Ministry spokesman. Elsewhere, a car bomb detonated near a Baghdad bridge and mortar fire hit several locations in the capital. At least three Iraqi civilians suffered minor wounds. A bomb placed in an Opel sedan went off near the eastern entrance to the Sarafiya Bridge in downtown Baghdad, according to The AP. Interior Ministry official Maj. Mushtaq Abbas said at least two mortars struck the former Higher Education Ministry near the central Saddoun Street.
