Youths charged with Damilola murder

Damilola Taylor bled to death in a stairwell

Police investigating the killing of schoolboy Damilola Taylor have charged four youths with his murder.
The youths, aged between 14 and 16, were arrested and questioned by detectives at various south London police stations on Tuesday morning.

Ten-year-old Damilola bled to death in a stairwell on the North Peckham estate, last November, after being stabbed in the leg while walking home.

The arrests came after Scotland Yard received a letter from the Crown Prosecution Service, which had been considering a file of evidence against the four.

One of the youths is aged 14, one is 16 and the other two are 15. None of them can be named for legal reasons.

Damilola was attacked en route from the Oliver Goldsmith primary school in Southwark.

He had stayed behind to attend an extra computer class. It was dark by the time he left.

The 10-year-old was close to home when he was stabbed but suffered such severe loss of blood from a wound to his femoral artery that he fell.

Appeals

His body was found a few minutes later but he was dead on arrival at King's College Hospital.

The boy's family had moved to Britain from Nigeria three months before Damilola's death so that his sister could receive medical treatment.

There have been numerous high-profile appeals for information relating to Damilola's death, including a reconstruction on the BBC's Crimewatch UK programme.

Last month his school friends joined pop singers including Gabrielle, Des'ree and Roachford to launch a record dedicated to his memory.
