'Several killed' in Baghdad blast

At least 14 people have been killed and more than 60 injured after a car bomb exploded in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, police and hospital officials said.

The blast occurred at the popular Bab al-Sharji market near the city's Tayaran Square - a part of central Baghdad that has been targeted by fighters in the past.

Many of the victims of Friday's blast were civilians, with at least one woman and one child reportedly among the dead.

The area was at the time full of shoppers heading home after Friday prayers.

Security forces sealed off the area, which is close to the Iraqi interior ministry and houses one of Baghdad's main bus stations, AFP reported.

A double car bombing in the same area in January this year left more than 80 people dead.

Market attacks

Fighters have frequently attacked markets across Iraq, particularly in Baghdad.

Last month, two bombs hidden in cardboard boxes used to carry animals exploded in the city's al-Ghazal pet market, killing at least 13 people.

The latest attack comes at the end of a relatively quiet holiday period in Baghdad.

According to the US military, violence across the country is down nearly 60 per cent.

But attacks continue in Diyala province, north of Baghdad, where military commanders say many fighters that previously controlled parts of the capital have fled.
