Her husband wants her to work against her will Fatwa No: 102031
- Fatwa Date:28-11-2007
Asalamu aleikum I work in a factory in Switzerland. But I would like to quit working. Because it is allmost impossible to find a job where mens and womans are not mixed. And this fulltime job (42 hours a week) doesn't permit me to fullfil my dutty in the household. My husband wants me to continue working. Because he wants to build a house in his country. And if I did'nt work he would have to pay all by hisself. Do I have the right to stay at home against his will ?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
It is permissible for you to leave this job even if your husband disagrees. Rather, you are obliged to leave it if it is mixed [men and women working together] and you are not in a necessity to continue doing it.
As regards the matter of spending [on you and the children] and accommodation, then it is your husband who is obliged to provide them.
For more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 91310 and 89170.
Therefore, we advise you to discuss this matter with your husband (in a good manner) in light of the above but you should not cause any dissension.
Allaah Knows best.
