Question

I am an Egyptian living in Riyadh. I was honored to make ‘Umrah during the month of Shawwaal. Thus, I am in the state of Tamattu‘ and will go for Hajj this year, Allaah Willing. I intend to perform another ‘Umrah before Hajj. Hence, will I have to offer one or two sacrificial animals because I am in the state of Tamattu‘ for two times?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

You have to provide only one sacrificial animal because you will assume Ihraam for another ‘Umrah. You are not obliged to offer a sacrificial animal for the first ‘Umrah because you traveled to Riyadh after you had performed it and thus you left the state of Tamattu'. Ibn Muflih,  the Hanbali scholar said while mentioning the conditions of Tamattu', “The pilgrim must not travel in the interval between ‘Umrah and Hajj. If he travels the distance that makes it possible for him to shorten prayers and then assumes Ihraam, then he will not be required to offer a sacrificial animal. ‘Umar said, ‘The pilgrim who returns is no longer in a state of Tamattu‘ because he did not comfort himself by staying in Makkah as in the usual case of the Tamattu’.”

Allaah Knows best.
