What to do when you find a magic spell Fatwa No: 18351

By chance I found a roll of hair along with paper with my cell phone number written backwards on it under the cover of the stairs where I always walk. What is this and what should I do with it?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
Whoever finds magic and wants to get rid of its evil should undo it and then bury it. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did this with a spell made on him by a Jew called Labeed Ibn Al-A‘sam. In another narration, ‘Aa’ishah wanted to take out the spell which was done to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and learn who to undo it, but he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, told her not to do so, rather he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, told her to bury it without opening it because he was afraid that by showing this to the people evil would spread among them and they would be tempted to learn how to perform spells. [Al-Bukhari]
This narration proves the permissibility of taking the spell and undoing it, and that doing this nullifies magic. However the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, restricted this to burying the spell only without taking it out, lest this should lead to the spread of evil between people.
We advise you to regularly observe the morning and evening mention of Allaah and to recite them at all times, because they are one of the greatest means of preventing magic and invalidating its effect.
Allaah Knows best.
