Question

assalam alaykum.dear sheikh,i heard that writing Allah's names or qur'anic verses on vehicles is haram due to the possibility of coming into contact with filth.then i saw a neighbour of mine wrote the words 'God bless..' on his vehicle.but somebody told me that the word 'God' does not properly indicate the divine name.now is my neighbour doing haram? Am i obliged to tell him to erase this words?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The Names of Allaah The Almighty should be respected and honored whether they are written in Arabic or in another language. If the words in the question mean "Allaah bless...", then it is impermissible to write them on a place where they may be exposed to disrespect, where filth and impurities may reach them for example. Hence, it is obligatory to object to anyone who does that.

Of course, if a Muslim writes the words "God bless...", then he actually means "Allaah bless...".

Allaah Knows best.
