Question

I am a young man. I did not succeed in entering the field I wanted. Therefore, I strayed away from Allaah The Almighty. I am in a bad psychological state. Please advise.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alyhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Once, while riding an animal together, the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, taught Ibn ‘Abbaas and his father, that:

1-      If he observed the orders of Allaah The Almighty, He would protect him in this life and in the Hereafter.

2-      If he always sought the pleasure of Allaah The Almighty, He would protect him from all unpleasant matters in this life and in the Hereafter.

3-      If he wanted to ask someone for something, he should ask Allaah The Almighty, because by himself, no one can bring about benefit or harm.

4-      If he wanted to seek help from someone for anything concerning this life or the Hereafter, he should seek the help of Allaah The Almighty.

5-      If all the people tried to benefit him, the benefit that he would receive would only be something that Allaah The Almighty had already decreed for him in advance.

6-      If all the people tried to harm him, the harm that he would suffer from would only be something that Allaah The Almighty had already decreed for him in advance. All that Allaah The Almighty has decreed in advance has already been written in Al-Lawh Al-Mahfooth (The Preserved Tablet). Nothing has been written in Al-Lawh Al-Mahfooth after all that Allaah The Almighty has decreed in advance. [Ahmad]

At-Tirmithi declared this Hadeeth as Hasan Saheeh (Sound).

Dear brother, ponder over this Hadeeth, as it contains so much wisdom.  Why would one feel sad about something that was decreed in advance by Allaah The Almighty? If a person wants to be happy, he should:

1-      Be pleased with what Allaah The Almighty has decreed.

2-      Firmly believe that the choice of Allaah The Almighty concerning his matters is much better than his own choice.

3-      Firmly believe that everything that occurs has been decreed in advance by Allaah The Almighty before he was born and even 50 thousand years before the creation of the skies and the earth.

In a Hadeeth on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar and his father, the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that Allaah The Almighty wrote and decreed what will happen to His creatures 50 thousand years before He created the skies and the earth. [Muslim and At-Tirmithi]

If a person truly knows this, he will be happy and content, and would enjoy peace of mind.

You said that you did not succeed in entering the field that you wanted. Do you think that Allaah The Almighty decreed that you will enter this field, but people prevented you from entering it? Or do you think that Allaah The Almighty did not decree this, but decreed something far better for you, provided that you observe His rules? The first possibility is impossible. The second is certainly correct!

Therefore, do not feel sad about any loss you experience as Allaah The Almighty has not decreed it for you anyway. Do not commit any sins because of what happened.

Repent to Allaah The Almighty and say this Du‘aa’ (supplication):

"Yaa Hayyu yaa Qayyoom, birahmatika astagheeth. Aslih li sha’ni kullahu wala takilni ila nafsi tarfat ‘aynin wa la aqall min thalik. (O Allaah, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence! I seek refuge in Your Mercy. Make all my affairs well. Do not leave me to manage my own affairs for one second or even for less than that.)" [At-Tirmithi, An-Nasaa’i and Al-Haakim]

Allaah Knows best.
