Drawing sketches of women for a dress-making course Fatwa No: 250312
- Fatwa Date:5-5-2014
Is it impermissible to draw only body structures with body, hair and full dress of ladies as sketches only not the real face or body just in a courses of dress making after which dresses are made according to that sketches?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
If the image is not clear, in a way that those who see it do not distinguish the features, then such an image does not fall under the prohibition, Allaah willing. This is even more certain than the small images with clear features which a number of scholars actually held to be permissible.
The Fiqh Encyclopedia reads: “The Hanafi scholars stated that small pictures are not included in the prohibition of possession and use, on the basis that image worshippers would not use them for such a purpose. They set different criteria for the size of permissible pictures; some of them said that the criterion is that the picture should not appear clear to the onlooker except with great scrutiny, and some of them said: that it is not seen from afar. The author of Ad-Durr said: It is the picture which if one is standing and it is on the floor, he does not see the details of the members of the body of the person in the picture.”
