Minds cannot perceive torment and bliss in the grave Fatwa No: 25848
- Fatwa Date:25-1-2011
The resurrection of a person starts once he dies, and it is known that the grave is either a garden of Paradise or a pit of Hell. Please, explain to me how the person feels torment or bliss in his grave. Does a dead person experience the passage of time like the living?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Torment and bliss in the grave are facts that the Quran and the authentic Sunnah have clearly confirmed. Therefore, we must believe in it. Ibn Abi Al-‘Izz, a Hanafi scholar said that there are many narrations from the Prophet attesting to the torment and bliss in the grave in a way that would make every competent person undoubtedly believe in them. Also, we must confirm and believe in the reality of the person being questioned by the two angels in the grave. We should not discuss how it would happen, since human minds are incapable of perceiving it because they have not experienced it. Discussing this topic would leave the human mind perplexed.
Allaah Knows best.
