No specific way to tie the Hijab Fatwa No: 26641
- Fatwa Date:31-8-2015
All praise be to Allah, the Exalted; I observe the obligation of Hijaab and cover my face and hands. However, some people tell me that I should wear a head cover that is sewn from the front, but I wear a large cover that is wrapped around. Please note that my clothes are loose-fitting, not transparent, and do not outline my body. Is wearing such a kind of head cover considered a religious innovation?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
May Allaah, the Exalted, reward you for your eagerness to adhere to the religion and submissively comply with the Commands of Allaah, the Exalted, in a time when Fitnah (temptation, tribulation) and temptations prevail and are diverse in form and manner. You should know that the Muslim woman is enjoined to adhere to the Islamic Hijab, which is a confirmed obligation based on texts from the Quran, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Muslim community. The obligation of wearing Hijab is even further emphasized when temptation is widespread and successive. Unfortunately, this is the sad reality nowadays, which cannot be denied. The description of the Islamic Hijab has been defined in Islam according to conditions detailed in many pervious Fataawa.
However, there is no reference in the religion to a specific form of Hijab. Based on that and on the fact that Islam obliges women to wear the Hijab, it can be deduced that it is left to the norms of each people to determine the form of their Hijab. This differs according to various communities, countries, and peoples. Therefore, people may differ in the form of their Hijab as long as they fulfill the basic conditions set by the religion concerning it.
There is nothing wrong with a woman wearing any form of Hijab—long head cover or anything else—as long as they fulfill the conditions set by the religion. Moreover, the Islamic Hijab should not be a garment of notoriety that attracts people's attention due to the uncommonness of its form or color.
Allaah Knows best.
