Question

Assalam o Alaikum Whenever something precious of ours gets lost, example jewelry or money, there is a maid in my aunt's house who helps us find it (if she can). She has a sort of "Ilm" 1. she tells us an Ayat to keep reciting. 2. She prays at night and goes to sleep, sees something in her dream and tells us "stop looking. it is now lost." or "keep searching in the house." etc. I wanted to ask if this is a form of shirk, as we know only Allah knows everything and that all profits and losses are from him. She never asks for money. But we give her something off and on because we know she lives in a terrible situation. Should we continue asking for her help

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

It is the magician and diviner who claim to know the Unseen, and Islam has forbidden us from inquiring from them and believing in what they say.

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "A person who goes to a diviner and asks him (about something), his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights." [Muslim]

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, also said: "Whoever goes to a diviner and believes in what he says has indeed disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam." [Abu Daawood]

A person should not be deceived by their advice to recite something from the Quran and the like, as this may be their trick to confuse people and mix truth with falsehood. Also, one should not pay attention to what they say to be true sometimes, as they lie much more than they say the truth.

‘Aa’ishah narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was asked about the diviner, and he replied: "They are nothing." They said: "O Prophet of Allaah, sometimes they say something and it turns out to be true." The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "That is the word of truth that the jinn steals and puts in the ear of his (human) ally, and they add to it one hundred lies." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Therefore, we advise you to be cautious with this woman and not to ask for her help in such matters of the Unseen.

Allaah Knows best.
