Deeds that save from the torment of the grave Fatwa No: 30742
- Fatwa Date:8-3-2012
I would like to know the deeds which illuminate the grave. I heard that whoever memorizes Surat Al-Mulk (Chapter 67), will have a grave filled with light.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger. Ways of being saved from the torment of the grave include: 1- Perfecting Tawheed
2- Obeying Allaah The Almighty and doing good deeds: On the authority of Abu Hurayrah the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that after the dead person is lain in the grave, if the deceased is a believer, his prayer will stand at his head, fasting on his right, Zakah (obligatory charity) on his left, doing good deeds including giving charity, maintaining good relations with kin, kindness and benevolence will be at his feet, all of which will ward off torment so that he will not be punished. [Ibn Hibbaan and Al-Haakim]
3- Jihaad in the way of Allaah The Almighty: It was mentioned in the Hadeeth (narration) of Salmaan Al-Faarsi that anyone who makes Jihaad in the way of Allaah The Almighty for a night and a day will be safe from the questioning by the angel in the grave. [Muslim]
4- Reciting Chapter Tabaarak (Al-Mulk): Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that this Chapter interceded for a man in the grave until his sins were forgiven. [At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah]. He also said that Chapter Tabaarak prevents the torment of the grave. [Al-Haakim: (Saheeh); Al-Albaani: (Saheeh)]
Allaah Knows best.
