Permissibility of socializing with non-practicing Muslims for Da‘wah Fatwa No: 34807
- Fatwa Date:8-1-2008
I am a practicing Muslim, praise be to Allaah The Almighty, but my friends are not. What is the ruling of accompanying them with the intention of calling them to observe the teachings of Islam?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
We ask Allaah The Almighty to grant you steadfastness in religion and guide you to the straight path. You should know, dear brother, that the extent of your friends' observance of religion indicates the extent of your own observance. This is because every person is directly influenced and affected by the religion and ways of those whom he accompanies and socializes with.
If you feel that you are steadfast in righteousness and you do not fear that your friends will corrupt you, then you are allowed to sit with them with the intention of doing Da‘wah. The Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that if a Muslim succeeded in making only one person observe Islam, this would be better for him than the most precious wealth of this life. [Al-Bukhari and others]
Allaah Knows best.
