Fatwa No: 360943

Question

We know that it is haram to eat from the meat of an animal which has been slaughtered for other than Allah. Now, there are many people who slaughter during in order to show off, and not to please Allah only, during the Eid. Is it halal to eat from that meat?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we would like to draw your attention to the fact that it is not permissible to accuse a Muslim of showing off without evidence. In principle, we should think well of a Muslim until the contrary is proven.

As for eating from that sacrifice on the assumption that what you mentioned is true [that it was slaughtered for showing off], then there is no harm in eating from it if it is slaughtered according to Islamic rites.

There are conditions for slaughtering according to Islamic rites which are known to the scholars.

Ibn 'Uthaymeen was asked in Fataawa Noorun ‘ala Ad-Darb, “What are the conditions of slaughtering according to Islamic rites?

He replied:

The conditions for slaughtering according to Islamic rites include the following:

The first condition: The person who slaughters should be entitled to do that, i.e. he should be a Muslim or a person from the People of the Book, as Allah says (what means): {This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them.} [Quran 5:5] Ibn Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with them, said, ‘Their food refers to the animals slaughtered by them.’

The second condition: The blood should gush forth from the slaughtered animal by cutting off the two jugular veins that surround the throat.

The third condition: He should say Bismillah (in the name of Allah) when slaughtering the animal, as the Prophet said, ‘If the blood is shed and the name of Allah is mentioned, then eat (from it).
