Mathematical Numbers are not Expressions or Metaphors of Divorce Fatwa No: 390187
- Fatwa Date:16-1-2019
Asalam O alaikum! Can mathematical numbers also be considered as metaphors for divorce? For example a person is calculating taxes and he is writing numbers in calculator or computer for the purpose and intention of calculating taxes and he gets a wawasa about metaphors for divorce but his intention is to work. Can those numbers also be considered as metaphors for divorce? A person is an accountant and he gets these wasawis when he writes mathematical numbers for the purpose of his accounting work. He has no intention of divorce but he gets wasawis when he write numbers on calculator or on computer or even paper. He is newly married and suffering from huge waswasa issue in his marriage life. He wants to get rid of these waswasas. Please reply soon.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Divorce takes place with explicit words of divorce, such as “You are divorced”, and it takes place with one of the metaphors of divorce if one has the intention of divorce, such as saying “Go to your family.”
Writing mathematical numbers is not included in this at all.
The divorce of a person who suffers from whispers does not take place even if he uttered an explicit expression of divorce while he did not intend it, as stated by the scholars.
At-Taaj Wal-ikleel, from the Maliki School of jurisprudence, quoting from Al-Mudawwanah, reads:
"The divorce of a person who suffers from whispers does not take place, because it is from the devil, so he should repel these whispers and not pay any attention to them." [End of quote]
When a person has these whispers, there is no treatment for them except to repel them completely in addition to seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, and mentioning Allah as much as possible. Allah Says (what means): {And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.} [Quran 41:36]
