Joining Islamic Groups
Fatwa No: 393802

Question

Is it allowed to be a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind ? If it is not allowed the is it allowed to participate in their gatherings, events, programs, dawah activities conducted by them?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The permissibility or prohibition of joining this group or others is based on the knowledge of its activity, creed and methodology.

We are not aware of this and we do not concern ourselves with issuing judgements on groups. What we can say, however, is that the Muslim cooperates with all people in goodness and truth, and stays away from them in evil and falsehood. Allah Says (what means):

* {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.} [Quran 5:2]

* {... and do good….} [Quran 22: 77]

Allah Almighty legislated cooperation in righteousness and piety and participation in doing good even with a non-Muslim, let alone with a Muslim.

The Prophet said about the belligerent polytheists on the day of Al-Hudaybiyyah: "(I swear) By Him in Whose hand my soul is, they will not ask me a good thing by which they honor what Allah has made sacred except that I will give it to them." [Al-Bukhaari]

In another narration he said: "I witnessed a pact in the house of ‘Abdullah Ibn Jud’aan which is better for me than possessing red camels (a very expensive species of camels), and if I am to be called to it in Islam, I would accept it." [Al-Bayhaqi]

This pact was conducted in the Pre-Islamic era of Ignorance on the basis of supporting the oppressed and giving him back his right.
