The mere feeling of a person that his soul is evil – as you mentioned – does not lead to the ruling of Kufr (disbelief) or the like, especially from the person who is afflicted with whispers.

In any case, the criteria for Shirk (polytheism) in love – as Ibn al-Qayyim said in Tareeq al-Hijratayn is: “As for the special love that is only suitable for Allah alone, and when a person loves someone else with Him, it is polytheism which Allah does not forgive, then it is the love of servitude that necessitates humiliation, submission, veneration, perfect obedience, and preference over others.” [End of quote]
