Is it permissible to give salaam in the tawarruk position? Fatwa No: 483376
- Fatwa Date:21-11-2023
If we sit in tawarruk position is it permissible to give salaam in the tawarruk position? Or should we revert to our usual sitting position of iftirash before we may give salaam? And if we should return to iftirash then is our prayer invalid if we give salaam in tawarruk?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
It is permissible to offer the Tashahhud during prayer while sitting in the position of tawarruk (sitting with the left posterior on the ground, the right foot placed vertically with toes pointing towards the Qiblah and the left foot on its side emerging from under the right foot), iftiraash (sitting with the right foot held upright on the toes, whilst sitting on the left foot), or any other position. It is not obligatory to sit in the iftiraash position during this, and the tawarruk position in the final tashahhud of the three-unit and four-unit prayers is the view of the majority of scholars. The Jurisprudential Encyclopedia reads: “The majority of scholars hold that it is recommended for the praying person to sit in the iftiraash position during the first tashahhud in the four-unit and three-unit prayers. Iftiraash means to place the right foot upright on the tips of the toes while spreading the left leg on the ground, with its back attached to the ground, and sitting on its inner side. As for tawarruk, it is recommended (Sunnah) in the final tashahhud of the four-unit and three-unit prayers. Its description is that the worshiper should raise his right foot, place the tips of his toes on the ground with their heads facing Qiblah, extend his left leg to the right side, attach his hip to the ground, and similarly position his left heel for alignment.”
Allah knows best.
