Quran is preserved from increase or decrease Fatwa No: 54570
- Fatwa Date:9-1-2014
We read in some books that a writer claims that there are some verses and Surahs dropped from the Quran, is that true? Is it true that Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with them, contradicted the Sharee‘ah in their rulings? May Allaah Reward you.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
The Quran is preserved from increase or decrease since Allaah Himself Guarded it and Did not Assign this mission to people. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Indeed, it is We Who Sent down the Quran and indeed, We Will Be its guardian.} [Quran 15:9] There is no doubt regarding the truthfulness of the Promise of Allaah. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {O mankind, indeed the Promise of Allaah is truth.} [Quran 35:5] The Companions unanimously agreed that the compiled written (Mus-haf) copy of the Quran during the era of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs is free from decrease and distortion.
The claim that Abu-Bakr and ‘Umar contradicted the Sharee‘ah rulings is refuted by many facts:
1. The quoted narrations which affirm their uprightness and the praise of the Companions to them because of their adherence to the methodology of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in conducting their affairs.
2. The well-known fact that the Companions did not use to approve the caliphs' actions if they were not right. There is no single transmitted incident indicating that one of the Companions disapproved any of their actions.
3. The well-known quoted sayings of ‘Ali in which he praised both of them.
4. The well-known fact that both of them honored the household of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and favored them over all other people.
Allaah Knows best.
