Teaching newly converted husband how to perform Ghusl
Fatwa No: 81678

Question

I am happily married to a Finnish man who embraced Islam. Upon conversion, he was given some books on how to pray and some recitations. As a married couple, we do get intimate. For myself, I know that after every intimacy I have to do the Ghusul of Janabha. But how should I tell my husband the recitations and interpret it in English to him. Please help!

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

After having sexual intercourse with your husband it becomes obligatory on both of you to perform Ghusl (ritual bath).

Ghusl means washing the whole body while running your fingers through your hair in order to make sure that the water reaches the root of the hair to the scalp. It is desirable, however, to start the Ghusl by saying Bismi Allah (in the Name of Allah).

You should also teach your husband his religion starting with the most important matters, so you start with the creed and teach him how to perform the prayer and the remaining pillars of Islam. You should also teach him the Quran that he should recite in his prayers like Al-Faatihah which is one of the pillars of the prayer. We advise you also to teach him some important supplications, like saying Bismillah before eating or drinking, the mention of Allah after the prayers as well as saying Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and so on.

We ask Allah to enable you to follow the right path and make you firm in what you are doing.

Allah knows best.
