When a Girl Starts to Have Menses She Must Wear Hijab Fatwa No: 82174
- Fatwa Date:6-6-2000
Does a girl have to wear hijab as soon as her period comes? Are parents allowed to force her? Please I want a proof from the Qur'an. Please answer quickly.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
It is an obligation on a girl to wear Hijaab when she reaches the age of puberty according to the most correct opinion of the scholars. As regards the issue of the parents forcing their daughter to wear Hijaab, then they should advise her in a soft and gentle manner and try to convince her. They should explain to her gently and wisely that wearing Hijaab is an obligation on every mature girl. Allah Says (what means): {Invite (all) to the way of the Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with then in ways that are best and most gracious).} [Quran 16: 125]
They should support their sayings with proofs from Quran and Sunnah which show the importance of Hijaab for a Muslim girl.
Having explained these proofs to the girl, if she still refuses to abide by the order to wear Hijaab, the parents have the right then to force her to wear it. No doubt, wearing Hijaab is for her protection and safety from disrespect of men and punishment from Allah. They are responsible for her and they will be asked about Her on the Day of Judgment.
Allah Says (what means): {O you who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allah, but do that which they are commanded.} [Quran 66:6]
The Prophet said: “Every one of you is a guardian and is responsible for the people under his guardianship: the Imam (Muslim ruler) is a guardian and is responsible for the people under his guardianship, a man is a guardian in his house and is responsible for the people under his guardianship, and a woman is a guardian in her husband’s home and she will be questioned over the people under her guardianship, and the slave is a guardian and he will be questioned about the money of his master.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Therefore, parents are responsible for both their male and female children.
Allah knows best.
