Mixing with Non-Praying Muslim Co-Workers Fatwa No: 83110
- Fatwa Date:24-7-2001
In the place where I am working nearly 100% of the Muslim was not praying. We work for the non-Muslim company. They always talk about disgusting things. Also they always take overtime without making the afternoon prayer (Zuhr and Asr), what are Islam's rules about them? Can I mix with them? Is there any harm to me if I mix with them. They all adults and very hard to advised.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Those Muslims who do not perform the prayer of Thuhr and ‘Asr in your company are committing a great sin. If they believe that performing the prayer is obligatory though they abandon it carelessly, then such persons are considered dissolute Muslims. This is the most preponderant opinion regarding them, while many scholars even believe that Muslims who do not pray go out of the fold of Islam (apostate). There are also strong supporting pieces of evidence from the Quran and Hadeeth for their viewpoint.
Anyway, performing the prayer is the second important pillar of Islam after declaring the Shahaadatayn (The Two Testimonies of Faith). The Sharee’ah warns of many repulsive dangers for those who ignore performing the prayer.
Therefore, dear brother, we advise you not to befriend these dissolute people and avoid being with them, and any time you happen to be with them exhort them and call them to abide by the rulings of the Sharee’ah. A bad man affects his friends badly even one who has no interest in his evils. The Prophet said: “The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is like that of the musk seller and the one blowing the bellows (or furnace); from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the one who blows the bellows would either burn your clothes, or you shall have to smell a bad nasty smell thereof.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
We warn you of being in harmony with them if they remain and continue on their position. There is a proverb in Arabic that a 'nature always steals from another nature.' The Prophet said: “A man follows the religion of his friend; so each one should consider whom he befriends.” [Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi with a sound chain of narrators]
May Allah bless all of us.
