Wife Feels Disrespected by Husband Fatwa No: 83962
- Fatwa Date:9-4-2002
I am married to a Muslim. I also have to state that I converted to Islam. My husband was a very attentive man, but now all of a sudden he changed, and my life has taken a heavy toll. He stays out late at night with his friends, and I am left all alone. I do not feel respected. Is there anything I can do?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
We thank Allah, The Great and Almighty, who has guided you to embrace Islam, the great and true religion. We pray to Him to honor you with your husband's following Islam, the straight path.
Unfortunately, some husbands do not follow the great Prophetic commandments concerning women and treating them kindly.
A husband's long absence at night outside the house constitutes negligence in his duties towards wife and a form of injustice.
But, know that a woman who bears such a situation patiently will receive a great reward as mentioned in the Hadeeth: “A woman who performs her five prescribed daily prayers, fasts the month of Ramadan, keeps her chastity, and obeys her husband (in what is permissible), she will be addressed: Enter Paradise from the gate which you like.” [Ibn Hibbaan]
So, you are advised to confer with your husband and do your best to convince him to honor your Sharee’ah rights over him, but kindly, politely and lovingly.
Also, you have to strive to make a home desirable to him through your good treatment and beautiful appearance. Then, pray to Allah, in Whose Hands are the keys to hearts, to bring you together in His obedience.
Allah knows best.
