Prostrations during the prohibited times Fatwa No: 84606
- Fatwa Date:29-7-2002
In the Name of Allah, the most beneficent and the most merciful and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad. During the period of "Zawwal" i.e. the time after the Fajr prayer, just before the Zuhr prayer, just about the noon time and after the Asr prayer, before the Maghrib prayer, when it is not allowed to offer prayer or offer prostration, if while reading the Qur'an during this time I come across the verse or the "Ayah" of the Qur'an, which requires prostration, can I prostrate during the above mentioned time. As you know, normally it is forbidden to prostrate at the above mentioned times. Please clear my doubt and answer my query. Please try to answer as quickly as possible, possibly within a week. Please keep my request as it is urgent and it is disturbing my mind.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
Muslim scholars differ concerning the ruling of prostration of recital during the times when performing voluntary prayer is forbidden. al-Malikiyah, al-Ahnaf (in known opinion) the correct opinion of al-Hanabilah state that a recital prostration should not be performed in that time for the Hadith that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "No Salat is to be offered after the morning prayer until the sun rises, or after the afternoon prayer until the sun sets" [ al-Bukhari from Abu Saeed al-Khudri ].
According to al-Shafiyah, and Imams Ahmad and Malik as confirmed in a narration from them performing prostration due to the recital of the Qur'an is permissible after Asr. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim wrote in his book 'I'alam al-Muwaqqieen': 'The Hadith that prohibits performing voluntary prayers in the times is general but there are many other Hadith that allow for performing peculiar prayers such as performing the missed or forgotten prayers, performing the prayers that are performed due to any reason as Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) made up the Sunnah of Zuhr after Asr, and he approved the act of the one who was performing Sunnah of al-Fajr after the prayer of al-Fajr. Also, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) approved the act of the one who had already performed al-Fajr prayer and came to the mosque, to perform it again to be voluntary prayer for him. He also ordered the one who came late to the Jumu'ah prayer while Imam was delivering the sermon of Friday, to perform two Raka'h as a salutation to the mosque' .
Allah knows best.
