Making Sajdah for Qur'anic recitation by computer Fatwa No: 86167
- Fatwa Date:9-9-2003
Do I have to give Sajdah while listening to the Qur'an from the computer and a part comes where you are supposed to give Sajdah?
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. The majority of Muslim scholars are of the opinion that the Sajdah (prostration during the Qur'anic recitation) is only a Sunnah act not an obligatory one. al-Malikiyah and al-Hanabilah stipulate for making Sajdah that a person should have heard the Ayah from a person who is eligible to lead people in prayers. al-Shafiyah believe that making prostration is likeable even if the Ayah of prostration is recited by a woman, child even if he is impure or Kafir. On the other hand, he should not make the recital prostration if he hears the verse from a sleeping person, drunken or an impure mature Muslim. All the above conditions surely, do not fit the recitation that is played in a tape recorder or a computer. Therefore, we cannot say for sure that making recital prostration is Sunnah if one hears the Ayah from a recorded material. Allah knows best.
