Admitting sins after returning into Islam: right or wrong? Fatwa No: 86230
- Fatwa Date:14-9-2003
How could I admit my sins immediately after returning into Islam?
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. As soon as the person becomes Muslim all his previous sins are erased. All the past sins of everyone who embraces Islam are removed and he becomes clean from such sins just as a newborn child. If he commits sins afterwards he has to make repentance towards Allah, Who will erase them if He wishes. A true repentance consists of deep sorrow for what has happened, firm decision not to commit it again as well as giving up that sin forever. Know that all the matters should be between the person and his Lord. One should not go to any scholar or any other good person to admit his mistakes as practised by some groups of non-Muslim. On the contrary, it is compulsory on a person to screen himself if he has committed a sin, i.e. not to divulge it. Another condition of a true repentance besides the above condition is that if one has done an offense to a human being, he must return the material rights to that person and should ask him forgiveness for other rights. Allah knows best.
