Holding Quran and Reciting from It while Praying Fatwa No: 86674
- Fatwa Date:30-11-2003
Can Muqtadee listen Qur'an openly behind Imam and correct Imam during his recitation in Taraweeh prayer and obligatory prayers?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Reciting the Quran from the Mus-haf is lawful in prayer regardless of whether the person reading it is the Imam, the one praying behind him, or the one praying alone. This is because of the general aspect of the evidence that permits reading the Quran which includes both reading from Mus-haf (Quran Book) and reciting from own memory. It was reported that Dhakwaan, ‘Aa’ishah's slave, used to lead her in prayer while reading from the Mus-haf. [Al-Bukhari]
There is no objection as regards holding the Mus-haf while praying behind the Imam in order to correct him if he makes a mistake or help him if he gets stuck. This can be done by one of the people praying behind the Imam, which is better. But if one cannot do the job, so it would be acceptable that more than one person holds a Mus-haf for this purpose. But one person is better to avoid contradicting the view of the Hanafi School of jurisprudence who believe that such a person's prayer is not valid.

Allah knows best.
