Question

In my native country people celebrate what is called the festival of and “Barweeh”? Has this any confirmation in the Hadith or the Prophet’s (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) Sunnah? They do this by lighting up Chirags (small lanterns) and by preparing pots full of sweet rice?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Celebrating the anniversary of the death of Sheikh Abdel Kader Jillani is an aberrant innovation, and calling him the (Gouth Aazam) greatest help is the most heinous injustice.  It is Kufr if someone believes that he (Jillani) can help those who seek his help instead of Allah or that he is controlling the world, etc… If someone slaughters to anything other than Allah, he is associating and making partners with Allah and that takes him out of Islam because slaughtering is an act of worship and if this act is devoted to anything other than Allah it is Shirk.

Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Verily, my Salât (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allâh, the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinns and all that exists).}[6:162].

Allah further Says (interpretation of meaning): {Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad ()) Al-Kauthar (a river in Paradise); Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only).}[108:1-2].

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: “Allah has cursed whoever slaughters (makes sacrifices) to other than Allah”, reported by Muslim.

Therefore it becomes an obligation to stay away from this anniversary and whatever evil things occur on this occasion, and to warn people against it and advice the Ummah to stay away from it.

Allah knows best.
