Sixth sense in Islam Fatwa No: 87955
- Fatwa Date:13-6-2004
What is the concept of the 6th sense in Islam?
For example, I was told that when you are about to do something and you suddenly changed your mind saving you from a calamity that your angel stopped you from doing it. But, someone said to me that there is a 6th sense in Islam Is that true?
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
The sixth sense is a new term and is not a religious one.
The writer A'ishu Zamanihi defined it saying: "The sixth sense is defined as an involuntary innate feeling which is far from logic that enables the one who has it to be cognizant of the unknown and of the future. Most of the people possess this sense, but with various degrees…."
Of course, this definition is in contradiction with the Islamic creed, because a human being cannot know the unseen or the future, and cannot know anything that will happen in the future except if he guesses and something happens according to his guess.
But, we must exempt from this what Allah revealed to his Prophets of the unseen, which they believed in without doubt as it was revelation.
Allah says: "(He Alone) the All-Knower of the Ghâ'ib (unseen) and He reveals to none His Ghâ'ib (unseen)." (Al-Jinn 72:26)
Nevertheless, what is known in Islam is the insight. Thirmidhi reported in his sunnan that Abu Said Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Fear the insight of the Mu'min, he sees with the light of Allah."
The author of the book "Tuhfat-Al-Ahwadi" said: "The insight is of two kinds: - The first kind is of the meaning of the Hadith, which is what Allah puts in the hearts of the people whom He loves. Thereafter, they know the conditions of people by the miracles which Allah blessed them with, the insight and vision. The second kind is what is concluded from experience, conduct and good manners; by which we know the conditions of people as well."
You have to know that nothing happens to a person except that which is predestined for him. The person will not be determined to do something, or refrain from doing something except what is already written in the Book (predestined).
"What befalls you is not to miss you, and what has missed you is not to befall you."
Allah knows best.
