- Fatwa Date:25-11-2004
What is the meaning of Makrooh? If we are not like anything is Makrooh? Please send everything about the Halaal, Haraam, Sunnah, Makrooh, etc. word and meaning.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Rulings are based on the Sharee'ah (Islamic jurisprudence) and not on the consideration of the pubescent person who is obliged to perform religious obligations.
So if we say 'dislikeable', it refers to what Islam considers dislikeable, and the same thing applies to other rulings. As regards the definition of some terms, we will summarize them as follows:
1. Sunnah: Here it means what is desirable, i.e. what Islam urged us to do but did not make it an obligation on us. Its ruling is that whoever does it is rewarded and whoever does not do it is not punished. For example, the optional fasting of Mondays and Thursdays. This is the technical definition according to jurists. On the other hand, if the term is used to refer to the words or actions of the Prophet then it may be recommended or mandatory and so on, according to each particular case.
2. Waajib (obligatory/mandatory acts): This is what Islam obliged us to do. Its ruling is that its doer is rewarded and whoever does not do it deserves punishment. An example of this would be the five daily prayers.
3. Makrooh (disliked): This is what Islam urged us to avoid but did not make it an obligation on us to refrain from. Its ruling is that whoever does not do it is rewarded and whoever does it is not punished. For instance, taking and giving with the left hand.
4. Haraam (forbidden acts): This is what Islam made an obligation to refrain from. Its ruling is that whoever does not do it is rewarded and whoever does it deserves punishment. For example, committing adultery, fornication, or consuming intoxicants.
5. Mubaah (permitted/permissible acts): This is what Islam gave a choice to the person to do or not to do. Its ruling is that whoever does it is not rewarded and whoever does not do it is not punished; but one could be rewarded or punished for it according to his intention. For instance eating and drinking more than what the body can consume.
Allaah Knows best.
