Prostration for forgetfulness Fatwa No: 89546
- Fatwa Date:9-3-2005
After Sajdhatus-sahv and before Tasleem what is to be said?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Some scholars are of the view that a praying person should read the Tashahhud after prostrating for forgetfulness and before concluding the prayer. Their evidence is that the Prophet forgot something during the prayer, so he prostrated for forgetfulness and then said the Tashahhud, and after that he concluded the prayer. This narration is classified as weak by some scholars like Al-Bayhaqi and Ibn 'Abd Al-Barr and others. They said that the narration is correct without the mention of Tashahhud; therefore, if the praying person performs the prostration for forgetfulness then he can conclude the prayer without saying the Tashahhud again or anything else.
Allaah knows best.
