Wearing the symbols of Islam, Christianity and Judaism Fatwa No: 89813
- Fatwa Date:21-4-2005
I am a non-Muslim, but am very interested in the study of religions around the world. I wonder if it is okay to wear a necklace that has on it a symbol of the Crescent Moon and the Star along with symbols of other Abraham's traditions - namely, a Cross and a Star of David. Is this blaspheme?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
We are grateful to the questioner for his letter. We hope that it might form a link between us in the future, through which we may be able to exchange our views, ideas and guidance.
As for wearing the symbol of crescent and star, we would like to inform you that the sign of crescent does not have any significance in Islam. Though, many people in recent centuries considered it as the symbol of Muslims but in reality it is not, as there is no proof in the Qur'an and prophetic narrations of this.
Therefore, wearing the sign of crescent and star is allowed if a Muslim does not wear it with the intention of worship or to imitate non-Muslims.
By the way, if you are interested in Islam, please know that if you study Islam with an open mind and without prejudice you will surely find out that Islam is the only true religion other than which Allaah will not accept. If you continue studying Islam fairly and objectively you will discover the truth that Prophet Muhammad is the last and true Prophet, the Torah and Gospel had informed in advance about him, and every one who hears about him must believe in him and should follow his way. Besides studying Islam, if you sincerely ask Allaah to show you the right path, surely He will bless you and enable you to discover the truth.
No doubt what we are suggesting suits you. You have to seek the truth and hasten to accept it to save yourself from the Hellfire before it is too late.
