Question

I live in a non-Muslim country and I don't want to live here. Can I leave my parents to become a better Muslim even when my parents don't want that I leave?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we ask Allaah to reward you for being keen on observing your religious obligations and we ask Him to make all of us firm and steadfast on this religion until we meet Him.

You should know that the status of the parents in Islam is great as Allaah paralleled His Right with the right of the parents in the Quran as He Says (what means): {And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents…}[Quran 17:23]

So it is an obligation to obey the parents in what is permissible.

Therefore, if you are able to observe your religious rites, then you are obliged to obey your parents and remain in that country. You have to take every means that will help protect your religion, like not going out without a need, being keen on attending circles of knowledge, keeping company with righteous Muslim women and making use of other beneficial means.

However, if you are married and your husband wants you to travel with him to a Muslim country, then you are obliged to obey your husband even if your parents refuse to grant you permission to travel with him, because the right of the husband comes before the right of the parents.

Allaah Knows best.
