Trying to decide to become a Muslim Fatwa No: 90311
- Fatwa Date:28-3-2007
I know this may seem to be a stupid question or statement, but I would like to know if it would be wrong to convert to Islam [becoming a Muslim] if your currently homeless. The reason why I'm asking is because my cousin and her husband are Muslim and I've been thinking about becoming Muslim for about 10 months now but I have been struggling for years now and it seem as though whatever I do, I can't get whatever curse off of me that is on me. I constantly help others out but it always seem as though my children and I stay homeless. And I'm not sure if I would be wrong converting if I'm not financially stable, because I know of many women converting because they know Muslim men are good providers and that the Muslim community helps fellow Muslims out of dysfunctional situations. I'm very interested in the Muslim religion and searching for a religion. Also I have a mother that has never raised me always very mentally, verbally and has been physically abusive to me, my sister and my children. She's the only person that can make me so mad that I could actually do harm to her and after all the stealing lying and hurt she has put me through I've tried to respect her and forgive her and each time her behavior gets worst and now its to the point she'll tell vicious lies to my kids about me would it be wrong to completely cutoff all communication?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Being homeless or having a hard life does not prevent one from embracing Islam. In fact, many companions of the Prophet were poor and homeless when they embraced Islam, and they became highly regarded in their lives and throughout the Islamic history.
So, we advise the noble questioner to hasten to embrace Islam as soon as possible. For details, read Fatwa 88195.
Islam grants a very high rank for a mother. Allaah and His Prophet ordered us to be kind with our mothers in any case. So, you should try to be patient with her and ask Allaah to change her bad practice. For details read Fataawa 90201 and 85180.
Allaah Knows best.
