Sees her father in dreams when she does wrong things Fatwa No: 91308
- Fatwa Date:20-3-2006
I always dreamed my father (pious person, died 6 years ago) whenever I've done bad things, wrong doings or sometimes if I felt very angry to myself (for what I have done) or to anybody else. He appears in my dreams (on the same day things happened) without saying anything at least he can show his face or his presence. So, I said to my fiance that my father always reminding me that I've done sins. So, for me his message is for me to ask frgiveness to Allah ¬ to do any more sins. What can u tell me about this? They said dead person is dead& and will never give any message anymore.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
A good dream is from Allaah. The Prophet said: "The good dream is from Allaah while nightmares are from the devil. So, if any of you has a dream that he/she fears, he/she should spit on his/her left hand side three times and seek refuge with Allaah from its viciousness and from the evil of Satan, then it will not cause him any harm. However, he should not inform anyone about it." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Besides, the Prophet clarified that there are three types of dreams. He said: "There are three types of dreams: The thoughts and whispers that one has during wakefulness (day dreaming), what is suggested by the devil to frighten the person (night mares), or glad tidings from Allaah. So, if someone has a dream which he dislikes, he should not inform any one about it, but he should get up and perform a prayer." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] A dream could be from Allaah in order to draw the attention of the person to his mistakes and sins. Anyway, it is an obligation to repent from all sins, whether or not a person saw a dream which draws his attention to that. As regards the soul of the dead and whether or not they meet the souls of the live people in a dream, Ibn Al-Qayyim wrote a chapter on this in his book Ar-Rooh saying: ['The issue of whether or not the souls of the live people meet the souls of the dead is a complex matter which only Allaah knows. Senses and the reality are the best witness on this. So the souls of the live people meet the soul of the dead as they meet the souls of the live people as well. Allaah Says (what means): {It is Allaah who takes away the souls at the time of death (yatawafa) and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for a people who think deeply.}[Quran 39:42].'
Moreover, Abu 'Abdullaah Ibn Mandah quoted Ibn 'Abbaas to have said about the interpretation of the above verse: 'I was informed that the souls of the live and dead people meet in a dream, and they dialogue, so Allaah keeps the souls of the dead and sends the souls of the live back to their body.'
Furthermore, with regard to the interpretation of the Saying of Allaah (what means): {…and those that die not during their sleep.}, Ibn Abu Haatem said in his Tafseer (interpretation of the Quran): 'This means that Allaah takes the souls during their sleep, so the souls of the live and the dead meet each other, and they remind each other [about what they did (before he died)], and they recognise each other.' He said: 'So the soul of the live person returns to his body in this world until its prescribed time, but the soul of the dead would wish to return to the body of the dead person but it will be prevented from doing so.' …there is evidence that the souls of the live and dead meet, because the live person sees a dead person in his dream, and he would ask him questions, and the dead would inform him about things which the live person does not know, and what he would have told him coincides with what happened in the past or will happen in the future. It might be that he informs him about money which he (the dead) buried in a place which no one knows about, and it might be that he informs him about a debt he did not pay in his life, and he gives him details as regards the witnesses and evidence. More astonishingly than this, he might inform him about things which he did in his life and which absolutely no one knew about. Amazingly as well, he might even inform him about the time of his death and it will happen as he informed him. He might also inform him about things which the live person is absolutely certain that no one else knew about them.] [End of quote from Ibn Al-Qayyim]
