Intercession only with the permission of Allaah Fatwa No: 91551
- Fatwa Date:27-3-2006
Is it permissible to rely on intercession and not perform actions of good deeds?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
If what you mean is to rely on the intercession of the Prophet and not perform acts of worship while committing sins, then this is not correct. It is true that the intercession of the Prophet is confirmed but it is restricted to those whom Allaah gives him permission to intercede for them. Allaah Says (what means): {…and they cannot intercede except on behalf of one whom He approves.}[Quran 21:28]. Allaah further Says (what means): {And intercession does not benefit with Him except for one whom He permits.}[Quran 34:23]. Therefore, it is not acceptable to rely on intercession. Anyway, a person has to fear Allaah and should fulfil Allaah's Commandments and refrain from His Prohibitions. Some people will benefit from the intercession of the Prophet yet there are others who will be punished as Allaah described Himself as being prompt in punishment and Most Merciful. He is the Forgiver of sin, Acceptor of repentance, but severe in punishment.
Allaah Knows best.
