Question

I am a college student who will be finishing my diploma this June and the proceeding with the higher diploma. My college is located next to a Masjid and I am able to perform my Salah on time. But it does not offer H diploma and I am planning to move to another which is further away from the Masjid (Around 15Km away) and there are no Masjid there, but the quality of teaching is excellent. I am confused of whether I should move there and miss my Salah especially Jum'ah or look for another college around of which the teaching is not excellent/Please advice me.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

If the quality of teaching in the college which is near to the mosque is weak, then in our view you should join a college whose quality of teachings is very good even if it is far from the mosque. If the mosque is 15 km far away from the college, then you are not obliged to offer congregational prayer, as the Athaan without a loud speaker could not be heard from such a distance. As regards Friday prayer, if the mosque and the college are both in the same town, then some the scholars are of the view that it is an obligation to attend Friday prayer in such a case, whether the mosque is near or far. Therefore, you should endeavour to attend Friday prayer in order to avoid the difference of opinion in this regard.

Finally, we advise you to look for the Muslims who are keen to offer the prayer in this college and agree with them to establish congregational prayers as well as Friday prayer in a place near you, so that you would combine between the two good things: congregational and Friday prayers, and attending the college whose teaching is of high quality.

Allaah Knows best.
