Rivers and fountains of Paradise Fatwa No: 91889
- Fatwa Date:8-5-2006
What are the names of rivers and springs that had been mentioned in the Quran?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
There are many verses in the Quran which describe Paradise: its rivers, fountains and fruits. For instance Allaah Says (what means): {The description of Paradise, which the righteous have been promised, wherein are rivers of water the taste and smell of which are not changed, rivers of milk of which the taste never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey.}[Quran 47:15]. However, the names of rivers and fountains are not mentioned except fountain Salsabeel, Allaah Says (what means): {[From] a fountain within it [i.e. Paradise] named Salsabeel.}[Quran 76:18], and river Al-Kawthar; Allaah Says (what means): {Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad ], Al-Kawthar (a river in Paradise).}[Quran 108:1]. Nonetheless, some rivers of Paradise were mentioned in the Sunnah. The Prophet said: “Sayhaan, Jayhaan, An-Nayl (the Nile) and Al-Furaat (the Euphrates) are among the rivers of Paradise.” [Muslim]
Allaah Knows best.
