Question

My wife is richer than me, she accepted my idea to buy a truck and trailer, that I can drive and make money for my family she bought it, and I took the driving license for the truck driving, but she suddenly changed her idea after I took the driving license and without my consensus she hired another driver, I felt humiliated, because I was honest faithful to her, then I left the house, because of here direct contact and deal to other men, saying that this other man will manage my truck. The Quran says: ARRIJALU QAWAMUNAN ALAL NISA. Please tell me if I am right to distance my wife and not to allow that someone else manages her truck?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Your wife should not have arranged for another man to drive the truck because she already promised you to drive it. Even if we suppose that she did so for a particular benefit which she considered, it was more appropriate for her to inform you about that before she did so and before involving you in it. However, you have no right to leave her or prevent her from hiring another man to drive the truck without a sound religious reason. The wife has the right to spend her money as she pleases as long as this is within religious limits. Nonetheless, the jurists are of the view that it is desirable for a wife to seek the permission of her husband when she wants to spend her money, but she is not obliged to do so.

You have the right to prevent her from talking to men in a manner that it is feared she will be harmed or tempted, then if she persists in talking to them in this case, she is a disobedient woman. Allaah determined the steps that a husband may follow in dealing with a disobedient wife, and this is discussed in Fatwa 89480, so please refer to it.

Finally, one should be wise and endeavour to debate and have mutual understanding to arrive at a suitable solution.

Allaah Knows best.
