Fatwa No: 94253

Question

Salam Sheikh My question is that I am a sunni muslim man 21 y/o I have been tempted to homesexual taughts many times and have acted on them in the past knowing it was wrong. Now I am repenting it and inshallah do not hope to do it again and will be getting married soon. What will happen to me and what is my punishment. Could please quide me as I feel quilty everyday and had no idea that the sin was this bad until I researched about it, but I did know it was haram, but always told myself it was zina. Now I am repenting it and I understand that If I cover it Allah will hide it as well, (as for my understanding I may be wrong) Please advise me as soon as possible.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

There is no doubt that homosexuality is a grave major sin as we clarified in Fatwa 81617. Since you repented, we hope that Allaah accepts your repentance. No matter how great or small the sins of a person are, if he sincerely repents, Allaah will accept his repentance and will be pleased by his repentance, as He likes those who repent. Allaah Says (what means): {Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning] do not despair of the mercy of Allaah. Indeed, Allaah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”}[Quran 39:53]  Moreover, Allaah Says in a Qudsi narration: "O son of Aadam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you and I shall not mind." [At-Tirmithi]

Finally, it should be noted that you should be careful of despairing from the Mercy of Allaah, as it is only the disbelievers who despair of His Mercy. You should also conceal your sin and never inform anyone about it. For more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 85523 and 81962.

Allaah Knows best.
