US on Gulf Alert

GULF, (BBC)-The US Government has warned that what it calls "terrorist actions" may be imminent against US interests in the Arabian peninsula.
It has warned American citizens in the region to remain vigilant. This is the second such warning by the US State Department in under a month. Last time it was a worldwide alert.
This time the caution is focused on the Arabian peninsula, although the State Department says it has no further information on specific targets, timing or method of attack.

It reflects the extreme nervousness of the Americans following the attack on the warship USS Cole in Yemen last October, in which 17 people were killed. (Read photo caption below).
Last month, an FBI team investigating the attack left Yemen, following fears for their safety.
Shortly afterwards, a worldwide travel warning was issued to American citizens.
On that occasion, US Navy ships in the Gulf left port as a precaution.
There is no word yet of what the military is doing this time, but US Government facilities remain at a heightened state of alert.
No word either on the author of the threat, but the Americans continue to believe the Islamic militant, Osama Bin Laden, poses one of the greatest and most persistent threats to their interests in the region.
