Hijack drama on Turkish plane

A hijack attempt on a Turkish Airlines flight traveling to the Russian city of St Petersburg has been foiled, an aviation official has said.

Passengers disarmed the unknown assailant and the aircraft continued towards its scheduled destination, Orhan Birdal, the head of Turkey's airports management authority, said.

The aircraft later landed as scheduled at St Petersburg at 1120 GMT, the information service at the Russian airport said.

The attempted hijack took place after the Airbus A-320, carrying 167 passengers, had left the southern Turkish resort of Antlaya.

The hijacker claimed to have a bomb, television channel CNN Turk reported.

The incident occurred as the aircraft was flying over Belarus, CNN Turk quoted Binali Yildirim, Turkey's transport minister, as saying.

The man, who was said to be drunk, handed a flight attendant a note for the pilot reading, "I have a bomb. If you don't take me in [the cockpit] I will blow it up", Temel Kotil, Turkish Airlines director, told Anatolia news agency.

"The man then attempted to walk towards the cockpit ... and was overpowered by passengers." He was found to be carrying no explosives.
