Quake hits southern Philippines

Quake hits southern Philippines

A powerful earthquake has hit the southern Philippines, triggering panic among residents but with no reports so far of casualties.

The magnitude 6.2 quake struck at 11:20am local time (03:20GMT) on Thursday about 50km from the city of General Santos on the large southern island of Mindanao, according to the US Geological Survey.
Like neighboring Indonesia, the Philippines straddles the seismically active so-called Ring of Fire, a line of interconnected geological faults that encircles the Pacific Ocean.
The area has many active volcanoes and is frequently hit by powerful earthquakes.
The deadliest earthquake to hit the Philippines in recent years was a magnitude 6.8 quake on the main island of Luzon, which left more than 1,500 people dead.
