'Scores dead' in New York air crash

All 48 people on board a commercial aircraft that crashed into a house in New York state are reported to have been killed.

Forty-four passengers and four crew members were on board Continental Airlines flight 3407 which was arriving from Newark, New Jersey, when it crashed in Clarence Center, about 16km from an airport.

There were no survivors, officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and emergency services were quoted by US media as saying.

"We have multiple fatalities. The scene is secured by the state police and a long-term investigation is imminent," David Bissonette, an emergency coordinator in Clarence Center said.

One person on the ground was also killed, a county official said.

Al Jazeera's John Terrett, reporting from New York, said fierce fires were burning in the area.

The aircraft, a Colgan Air Bombardier Dash Q400, is believed to have been approaching Buffalo Niagara International airport amid sleet and snow when it went down.

It hit a house and exploded at 10:10pm (0310 GMT), John Manthey, a state trooper, said.

"I was told the plane simply dropped off the radar screen," a county official said.

Several homes near the crash site were evacuated as firefighters sought to control the blaze.
