Fighting halted in southern Philippine

"Effective today, we are suspending our military actions in all areas where our armed units are operating," Mohaqher Iqbal, head of the MILF's peace panel, told Reuters by telephone from a base on the southern island of Mindanao.

On Thursday, the government ordered a unilateral truce in the south of country.
The two sides are expected to meet next week in Kuala Lumpur to prepare for the resumption of talks and the return of about 60 peace monitors from Malaysia, Brunei, Libya and Japan who pulled out in November 2008.
This decision to reciprocate Manila's truce came after MILF chairman Al haj Ebrahim Murad met with the fighters' central committee on Saturday. Murad signed the truce order, Iqbal said.
Iqbal said the 12,000-member Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces were ordered to "support and cooperate with efforts to revitalize and strengthen ceasefire mechanisms on the ground".
Iqbal said his group would discuss with the government plans to return more than 300,000 displaced families to their homes and farms before the start of the month of Ramadan.
The conflict resumed after supreme court of the Philippine declared the agreement illegal on August 4 last year two parties agreed to sign, that would end four decades of armed conflict between the Filipino state and the Moro Muslims.
According to the United Nations-backed report, the biggest new internal displacement of people last year was in Muslim region in Philippine, where 600,000 fled fighting with government and MILF.
The population of Muslims is about 12 million. Between the years 1450 and 1515, two Islamic principalities were founded on the islands of Sulu and Mindanao. Islam came to the Philippines in the 13th century.
