US troops die in Afghan battle

At least eight US soldiers and two Afghans have been killed after their combat outposts in a remote area of eastern Afghanistan came under attack, military officials say.

The troops fought scores of tribal fighters for many hours on Saturday after the early morning attack in Nuristan province, Nato's International Security Assistance Force said.
However, a Taliban source said that more than 40 US and Afghan troops were killed in the daylong battle the Kamdesh district.
He claimed that the group had been able to take control of the district following the fighting and had captured 35 Afghan, including a police chief.
Mohammad Farooq, the province's deputy police chief, confirmed that contact had been lost with 19 officers and said it was not clear if they were dead or alive.
Taliban influx
Jamaludin Badar, governor of Nuristan province, said that he had sought more security forces for Kamdesh after operations by the Pakistan military in the Swat valley had driven Taliban fighters into the area and neighboring Kunar.
"When there are few security forces, this is what happens," he told the Associated Press news agency.
The attack was the deadliest for US forces in Afghanistan since nine soldiers were killed in a battle in Kunar province in July 2008.
New strategy
US forces had already announced plans to pull out of the area as part of a new strategy by General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan, to focus on population centers.
McChrystal, who now commands more than 100,000 troops, two-thirds of them American, has requested thousands more to implement the plan, warning that without them, the war will probably be lost.
Barack Obama, the Us president, has already ordered 21,000 extra troops to Afghanistan this year and is re-evaluating his overall strategy for the region before considering whether to send more.
